JoshCafe is produced by Joshua Newtonn (below), a writer of tales and an international award-winning writer based in the southern Indian port-town, Kochi.
His non-fiction and journalism have appeared in over 60 publications around the world. He’s the winner of 2005 Evangelical Press Association award (second) for the feature story on Gladys Staines ( ‘She Chose to Forgive’ ) published in Charisma & Christian Life, USA. A year before he won the Luis Valtuena VII International Humanitarian Photography Award (Special Prize) from Medicos Del Mundo in Spain. Joshua is the first Asian to win these honours.
He also wrote, shot, and directed Beyond, a 27-minute digital film in which his friends and neighbours were coaxed to act. National award- winning filmmaker Shyamaprasad after watching Beyond, invited Joshua to write an original screenplay for him. The attempt, Ritu, a tale about three childhood friends, was released in theatres in August, 2009. In the cinema halls, some booed. Some walked out. Some sat moved. Some suddenly became his admirers. And some left him forever. He, sits in his room, stupefied by the perplexing impact of storytelling.
HE SAYS | “Once, sitting by the window, wondering on the flow of life and how to capture the essence of it, I chanced upon this line by Dostoevsky: ‘I’m obsessed with the passing scene.’ Then I remembered that those passing scenes in life were the ones that had collectively given me my private desire to become a writer. They had given me a view of what lay about me.”
CURRENT PROJECT | Writing a book of non-fiction on the true life stories of people associated with a hotel group.
